A Kölsch glass for eternity

Unser Kölschstange aus Kupfer im Gaffel am Dom

Here at Gaffel am Dom, we have a Kölsch beer mug that never runs dry. It is not made of glass, but of solid bronze: heavy, durable, and unmistakably Cologne. The sculpture was created by Cologne-based sculptor Cornel Wachter, who has lived and worked in the southern part of the city for almost 60 years.

A monument to cologne beer

Cornel Wachter is an avowed fan of Gaffel and Cologne’s brewery culture. His work has created a monument to Kölsch beer. While a real Kölsch glass empties and is repeatedly refilled with fresh beer, this one remains full for eternity.

It symbolizes Cologne’s zest for life, consistency, and the special status that Kölsch enjoys in our city.

Art meets brewery culture

The sculpture is prominently displayed on the counter at the Trankgasse entrance. Anyone entering the bar can hardly miss it. But it is more than just an art object: it is part of a small ritual at Gaffel am Dom.

Because whoever touches the bronze bar has Cologne luck on their side.

With his Kölschstange, Cornel Wachter combines art, Cologne beer, and Cologne culture in his own unique way. Tradition and modernity come together here—with a wink. And that fits perfectly with us at Gaffel am Dom.
